Express Entry 2026: Category-Based Selection Updates and What Candidates Need to Know
In February 2026, IRCC announced the categories for Express Entry category-based selection. New categories include Medical Doctors, Researchers, Transport Occupations, and Military Recruits. Agriculture was removed. Minimum work experience was increased to one year.
This resource covers the 2026 updates to Canada's Express Entry system — specifically the new and retained categories under category-based selection, changes to the minimum work experience requirement, the planned reintroduction of CRS points for job offers, and the 2026 Express Entry allocation targets.
Express Entry category-based selection allows IRCC to issue targeted Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to candidates with specific skills, regardless of their overall CRS score. For candidates who qualify under a targeted category, this can dramatically improve their chances of receiving an ITA even if their overall points score would not otherwise be competitive in a general draw.
- New categories for 2026 category-based selection: Medical Doctors with Canadian work experience; Researchers and Senior Managers with Canadian work experience; Transport Occupations (pilots, aircraft mechanics, inspectors); Highly Skilled Military Recruits for the Canadian Armed Forces
- Retained categories: French language proficiency, health care and social services, and skilled trades
- Agriculture and agri-food occupations were removed as a category for 2026
- The minimum work experience requirement for category-based draws was increased to one year (from six months previously)
- IRCC plans to reintroduce CRS points for valid job offers and will add new points for high-wage Canadian work experience and Canadian professional certifications
